Fouzia Younis: Britain’s First Muslim Woman to Lead a Diplomatic Mission
When history books speak of modern diplomacy breaking barriers, the name Fouzia Younis will be written in bold. As the United Kingdom’s first Muslim woman appointed to head a diplomatic post, she currently serves as the British Consul General in Toronto, bringing both vision and resilience to one of the most dynamic diplomatic roles in North America.
At the helm of a 40-member team, Fouzia oversees critical issues including climate, trade, and technology, while safeguarding the interests of British nationals and companies in Canada. Her career path reflects a truly global journey: postings in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and across the Gulf have equipped her with expertise in political affairs, crisis management, bilateral trade, and economic development.
Her leadership extends beyond diplomacy. A champion of diversity and inclusion, Fouzia has been recognized with prestigious awards for her work advancing racial equity within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. In 2023, her contributions to foreign policy were formally honored by His Majesty King Charles III—a recognition that underscores both her excellence and her impact.
Educated at the University of Cambridge and the University of Birmingham, and raised in Stourbridge, UK, Fouzia represents a new era of diplomacy: inclusive, modern, and deeply human.
This February, she will share the stage at GLOBExCHANGE 2025 in Toronto alongside business and sustainability leaders, engaging in conversations that bridge the gap between private sector innovation and public good—from net-zero strategies to global investment and governance.
Fouzia Younis is more than a diplomat; she is a trailblazer whose story inspires women, young leaders, and changemakers across the globe.
